In 1981, Trailwalker was originally an endurance training exercise and race for Gurkha soldiers, with fund raising activity for the Gurkha Welfare Trust. The Gurkha Welfare Trust was originally established in 1969 to relieve poverty and distress amongst ex-Gurkha soldiers and their dependants.
In 1986, Oxfam Hong Kong began to co-organise the event, and to receive 1/3 of the donations. The other two-thirds went to the Gurkha Welfare Trust and to organizations which help people with disabilities in Hong Kong.

In 1997, Oxfam Hong Kong took over the event completely after Gurkhas left the territory.

綠巴遭的士狂撼 飛插隧道七死傷

(星島日報    報道)被居民形容為交通黑點的大涌橋路，昨清晨發生一死六傷嚴重車禍。一輛專線小巴和一輛的士，載著乘客駛經路口，疑有人高速衝紅燈，致兩車在十字路口轟然相撞，小巴如炮彈般衝前撞斷圍欄、飛越石壆，直插深逾六米的行人隧道內，全車翻轉，一名小巴男乘客拋出車外慘死，兩車另六人受傷，警方罕有地將兩車司機同時拘捕助查。

　　行走沙田    新城市廣場與黄泥頭之間的一部專線小巴，昨晨頭班車載著三名熟客，開出不久，疑抄捷徑，在沙田大涌橋路口被的士猛撞，飛墮行人隧道內，四十五歲男乘客李燦龍拋出車外，頭撞石壆當場身亡，而六名傷者分別是小巴司機和兩名乘客，及的士司機和男女乘客，各人年齡二十一至六十五歲，當中一男一女傷者情況危殆。




　　兩司機同被拘捕




　　警方新界南交通部署理警司黃劍榮表示，警方將循兩車衝燈、超速和機件故障三個方向展開調查。警方稍後以涉嫌危險駕駛罪名，拘捕小巴司機陳家華（六十五歲）和的士姓李司機（三十歲），晚上准以一萬元保釋，下月底返署報到。




　　車禍現場為大涌橋路近沙燕橋，是沙田其中一個最繁忙的十字路口，但晚上至清晨一段時間車輛稀疏，卻經常有車輛開快車和衝燈，車禍頻仍，今年三月便有一宗意外造成十五人受傷。




　　載三熟客抄捷徑




　　肇事的六十五號A專線小巴，昨清晨五時許是頭班車，陳姓司機接載的三名男乘客都是準備前往上班的熟客，由於幾乎每日見面，因而互相認識。小巴開車後，疑抄捷徑，沿沙田鄉事會路往威爾斯醫院    方向行駛。據知，小巴在沙燕橋應左轉大涌橋路，但因客人不多，司機一般都直駛沙田圍路。




　　涉及意外的另一部的士由姓李男子駕駛，載有一男一女，沿大涌路橋中線往馬鞍山，兩車駛到河畔花園對開路口，於路中央發生猛烈碰撞，並同時失去控制衝向河畔花園方向，其中專線小巴搖擺時，車內兩名男乘客李燦龍（四十五歲）及阮華超（六十三歲）同時拋出路面。




　　目擊者稱，小巴衝行二十米，剷上行人路掃毀兩米鐵欄及一個路牌，再飛越石壆，如拋物線般翻下六米高的行人隧道，全車翻轉，車頂凹陷，窗門破碎，有欄杆插入車廂之內。




　　的士撞欄始停下




　　相撞之的士也衝向沙田圍路，左後座女乘客施少燕（二十四歲）疑未扣好安全帶，撞破車窗拋出，倒臥馬路，的士撞向路邊鐵欄才停下，沿路大量玻璃碎片、車頭燈、半截車牌、路牌和鐵欄。




　　有河畔花園住客外出晨運，目睹車禍立即報警，消防員及救護員到場，發現倒在路中的小巴男乘客李燦龍已告斃命，消防員其後在小巴內救出被座位壓住的姓蘇男乘客（六十五歲），而肇事小巴司機、的士司機和二十一歲姓蕭男乘客僅受輕傷，自行走出。除死亡姓李男子外，其餘六名傷者送沙田威爾斯醫院救治，警方調查至中午，召吊車將肇事兩車拖往汽車扣留中心候驗。相關新聞刊A2及A4版

8:30 am From Pak Tam Chung to East Dam, i followed the first team and ran together. 
Down Long Ke Wan, then up Sai Wan Shan, i could no longer follow them since the uphill section. They ran much faster than me going up the mountain. Then i ran on my own, later i decided to run longer so i decided to run all the way to Pak Tam Au. At Sai Wan village, the first team was ahead of me by about 7 min. Without food and water support. i ran very hard till i reached Pak Tam Au, the people told me the first team was about 20 min. ahead of me. i did not wait for the second team and from there running back to Pak Tam Chung after someone gave me four bananas. i ran back up to High Island Reservoir to get back my clothing bag, then i ran down to Pak Tam Chung and finally ran and walked back to Mak Bin to take 299X back home.
